HIGHS
SS V-8 power, V-8 tailpipe music, good ol' all-American styling, spacious cockpit. |
|
LOWS
Bucket seats lack lateral support, portly curb weight. |
|
| |
WHAT'S NEW
3.5-liter VVT V-6 replaces 3.5-liter pushrod V-6 as standard engine, new gen OnStar, standard tire pressure monitor. |
|
BEHIND THE WHEEL
Even with new VVT 3.5 V-6, basic Monte is sluggish. SS is quick, but flabby suspension and torque steer severely erode fun-to-drive. |

CAPSULE REVIEW
Sharing the same unitbody structure as Chevy's Impala sedan family, the Monte Carlo is a big coupe in the grand old American tradition, even though it's front-drive. The addition of a 303-hp 5.3-liter V-8 engine to the hunky SS makes an otherwise humdrum poseur more interesting. |
